Google’s latest update will impact search rankings worldwide. Are you ready?
Each year, Google changes its search algorithm around 500–600 times. While most of these changes are minor, they occasionally roll out a “major” algorithmic update that significantly affects search results. These updates explain changes in rankings and organic website traffic and ultimately help improve search engine optimization.
What is Google doing?
On April 21, 2015 Google will start using mobile-friendly compliance as a ranking factor in smartphone search.
“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.”
Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high-quality search results that are optimized for their devices. Google will be reducing the ranking score for sites that have no mobile presence, based on the amount of traffic that a site receives from mobile devices.
Why are they doing it?
It’s reported that mobile search makes up to 30% of total traffic right now, regardless of industry. Users are flocking to mobile, so websites without a good mobile experience will soon find themselves losing out to competitors.
Over the past few years, Google has strongly encouraged further mobile friendliness by increasing the visibility of sites that are doing it well. They are issuing this major new update on April 21 to push the bar higher – and ensure that the web becomes an even friendlier mobile space.
